A local celebration of all things slithery encompasses everything from eel throwing to eel tastings.
It starts with a procession at 10.30 from Cross Green, (which is next to the Cathedral) headed up by Ellie the Eel with music by Ely´s Samba Band. The procession snakes through the city, along Waterside and arrives at the Jubilee Gardens. Once there, families can compete in Eel Throwing (not real eels!), children can try on costumes and play period games.
Tuck into smoked and jellied eels washed down by a special Eel Day brew.
As eels are an acquired taste, there is a hog-roast, pizza and various food vendors.
Please note: The evening Illuminated Boat Parade has unfortunately been cancelled due to the poor weather, many boat owners have been unable to put their boats into the water and therefore they have not had the necessary preparation time, this is such a shame as it would have been quite spectacular event.
