Important badge information : please note... avoid confusion & problems..

(originally a blog post)
There is often confusion with regards to badge placement,
(in fact it's the most viewed subject on the site, so you are not alone).
This confusion seems to be amongst some leaders too, (well there are a lot of of rules).
Something you won't find, (unless you experience it directly or go searching through the often overly complicated scout website, I had to look up the rulebook sub-sections to validate what i'm writing in this piece), is.....
Which badges to wear? ..when? ..how many? ..& how long for?
For instance, our own daughter has been wearing ALL her "joining in" award badges (pictured far left) ..is the one you receive after 3 years within the scouting movement, ..but she's worn hers with the others present because that's what we saw others doing, copied it, & were not told any differently. WRONG!!!!! (it is also shown incorrectly on the pdf).
..so confusion is understandable I think you'd agree!?
For this set of badges you wear the most recently awarded badge only & replace it with another next year (not all together), however if your pack leader simply hands it to you without a word of advice, what are you supposed to think!? (bad faux pas duplicated on scouting websites within the uk)!

Now lets take a look at the middle badge "commemorative badges" ..marking special events in society or scouting history , or history to which scouting is linked.
This badge, we were told was for wearing on a uniform or a camp blanket.... (correct)
What wasn't stated by pack leaders is that IF it's worn on a uniform it is to be removed after the event has finished (or within 3 months).
This poses us with a bit of a problem (personally), it's been stuck on with hemming tape, which leaves a nasty white patch looking like a paint spill... so we haven't removed it & are (some might say understandably) getting a flea in the ear with regards to it still being on, but what is worse?, a neat badge or a big messy leftover splodge (especially when representing scouting at an event such as rememberance)!?
So before you make a mess of a badge (when it could be simply stuck on a camp blanket), Please ASK whether the badge given is a permanent fixture badge or merely temporary & could go elsewhere.
The third badge (far right), as a staged activity badge (one of six available) is an easy one, you simply wear it with your other earned badges & replace it if you get the next one in the line of awards, such as "1" night camping / away ..this would be replaced by "5" (nights camping / away) ...& so on!
There will be more examples following the same order throughout your stay within scouting, so please check first!
Hope this helps, ..because we don't want to be chased around by Akela either!
