Held each week in-store (booking a place is essential as you can't simply turn up, over August this is a useful introduction into a child having more understanding of the bike they'll rely on for years to come.
..& you might be able to put it toward a badge! Please have an adult present in the kitchen to help with any kitchen skills & make sure all kitchen work is safe & hygienic. Stay safe, ..have fun, ..fill your tum! By Izzy M. When you are out at camp, or a similar fresh air environment, you use up lots of extra energy (sleeping under canvas), often waking up cold(ish) & tired you want & need a good breakfast for fuel to keep you going. Dad will eat an omelette (stuffed with cheese & veg) every day for weeks on end if he gets the chance when on the mountain because eggs can really give you lots of good energy which lasts the day without making you feel "heavy" which is good when you are bending over lots doing active sports, so this sort of recipe will make your taste buds happy & still allow you to jump around, or go hiking soon after eating. This is a grab & go "hot sandwich" recipe, best eaten warm, easy to make in one pan for a group of hungry folk ideal for outside at camp or as a week-end treat to get you awake & moving if you have time for a proper breakfast, in fact it's great anytime! Ingredients: Sausage, a camp staple! ..chop them into slices with a sharp knife! (get an adult to help you) Cheese, "all-sorts" grated.. Onion diced, to add some good flavour Garlic (optional) Salt & pepper (optional) Egg: lightly beaten to bind the ingredients together. Peppers, cut & sliced... Butter ..to put on those warmed muffins! English Muffins, one or 2 per person! equipment: 1x large cooking pan. Olive oil. Chopping board. kitchen knife. stove, ..camp fire ..or BBQ! ..these are often served in town restaurants when we're away too, so easy & filling to get some vital mountain energy (not just calories & fat to burn off). Don't leave out the peppers! try them they keep everything moist & give a really light flavour when cooked (besides they're really good for you)! ...the red, orange and yellow peppers are sweeter and almost fruity in flavour, & cooked for a short time contain lots of healthy bits & pieces we need to keep fit, including lots of vitamin C. The video shows how the BBQ pit boys do it outside & on a bbq grill, much like if you are at camp! However, we eat this at home, on a school day, ..week-ends, going up the mountain, (foil wrapped to eat in the ski lift), or, if we can't wait ...in the car on the way to the mountain! After seeing this, who'd want cornflakes ever again!? As you'll be told (again) on Wednesdays meeting, IF the weather is good we'll be pitching our tents a few nights before we actually camp, parents & cubs ae welcome to join & help get familiar with sticking up our multi sleep pod tents!
Please see Akela Judith or any leader for more details.... TIME & DATE WILL BE CONFIRMED ON WEDNESDAY EVENING Basically, the sooner these go up, the more fun we can have doing camp "stuff" "many hands make light work" ...so pile in & lend a hand (please) it all counts towards your camping badges & nights away amongst a good few others, so it's important you attend if at all possible! By Izzy M. Please have an adult present in the kitchen to help with any kitchen skills & make sure all kitchen work is safe & hygienic. Stay safe, ..have fun, ..fill your tum! It's got a posh sounding name but really it's a single layer of super rich chocolate cake, gooey on the inside, crispy on the outside, perfect after a hike, or warm out of the oven with a dollop of proper whipped cream & some freshly chopped fruit as a posh pudding. just right for locally picked strawberry season! My tarte is pretty much a fudge brownie, so if you've ever made those before you will be familiar with the taste & texture already! ...Mmmmm!!! You can cover it with even more rich sauce if you are making it for a proper pudding, but as I was just practising cooking with Mum & Dad we just had it warm & gooey with a cup of tea whilst we made another posh but fun pudding cake... (we dusted it with a little icing sugar which hides all the uneven bits on the top! ..works well for a 20 minute cake bake! There are LOADs of recipes for Torte, & can vary a bit depending on what you really like! ..this is a nice simple recipe though we added lots of cocoa nibs from our cake cupboard ..which really adds to the bite & flavour, & if you go down the simple packet mix route 1st time, then Dr Oetker does a pretty good one (it's a bit of a cheat but it's a good packet brand if your parents or carers don't have the time! ..but have a look here first at the ingredients http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/251621/dark-and-squidgy-chocolate-torte I bet you've got most if not all the ingredients around the kitchen! (DARK chocolate really gives this recipe it's colour & flavour so give it a go)! I've been taking it into school as a packed lunch pudding, if you store it in an airtight container it will keep for 5 days or so. Another simple "made by me" ...because us cubs CAN cook y'know.
Run! ..they've got swords
There were plenty of displays in Cathederal square, (a lot were very noisy involving fights & guns being shot, or just the clatter of roman armour as they showed how to drill & march! The vikings & the saxons fought each other (& charged at us too) ..with bits of shields flying all over the place when an axe or a sword hit as they tried to get at each other. We advertised it here, & it was a very full on experience (not to mention a opportunity to see some of the private areas of Peterborough cathederal. I got to see & learn about so much of our area's local history & those who lived here, there were plenty of re-enactors camped all around the cathederal & historic story telling of famous locals such as "Hereward the wake" The actors live in their period (of the time) tents, eating & drinking the same foods that were available, we particularly liked trying the roman (spelt seed) bread, pizza & mashed up anchovies, ...so much so that dad is threatening to make some genuine roman food recipes to eat! We learnt about roman weapons, saw plenty of armour, got to test out a roman bolt thrower (dangerous in the wrong hands) as well as, Celts, saxons, vikings, civil war cavalrymen, Napoleonic soldiers, tripod mounted machine guns from world war 1 & 2, ..in fact all-sorts, it kept us busy for most of the day! When you realise just how many people from different parts of the world lived here you realise that being british probably means you have, Danish, Icelandic, Norwegian, French, German, Italian, Hungarian, Spanish, & African blood in our genetic ancestry, this was told very well by a lady who made us realise that the romans never left, they simply took off their armour (or tunics) & lived in Britian raising families, as did many "invaders" of the past, such as the Vikings, and Normans, right through time here where we live, including Napoleonic prisoners of war, & more recently Polish soldiers & pilots, or small children from the "kinder-transport" who fled here during world war 2 after their home countries were taken over. You can find out lots more at the Peterborough museum (which is free to go to with parking all around it) just off Cathederal square. Leonardo-Da Vinci's "possibly" flying designs brought to life Inside the cathederal walls we came across a very early flying machine! (the sails were a plan by Leonardo De-Vinci ..but they were having trouble getting it to lift off the ground It was a great weekend put on by vivacity peterborough, & there will be more happening over the summer, i'm hoping I might have learnt enough to earn a local knowledge badge (& don't worry it'll be back next year, but we also have lots of living history happening at historical places all around us, look it up on the internet, or use our links section for what's happening in Peterborough, Cambridge & Bedfordshire ...there's more going on than you think! it was a great example of "horrible histories" (& this one tells you a bit about our area & Hereward the wake)! We've added a few extra site links lately including this one, ideal for wet weekends, projects & general larking around! http://www.paperairplanes.co.uk/planes.php A handy site for all those who love making "the best" paper planes, & a useful help for your air activities badge! ..ok so you might have already got that badge, but the paper plane making & flying was fun wasn't it!? why not tackle a project plane with a grown up!? there are lots to choose from & excellent video & picture instructions for some superb "flyers" ALWAYS have an adult helping you when working in the kitchen! & remember to wash your hands frequently to stop germs! By Izzy. If you tried my simple ribs, then why not try these!?, ..it doesn't need to be done on a bbq to taste good outdoors, often we start food in the oven & finish it off outdoors on the grille. Note: we made these in June 2013, local Ramsey Tesco prices for 1kg of wings was £2.29 per kg for a typical 16 pack of wings, so 1 or more packs may be needed depending on how many people you are making wings for. I recommend you prepare & coat the chicken wings 1 day before you intend to cook them. You'll need: 1kg (2.2Lbs) of prepared chicken wings. 2 tablespoons of tomato sauce. 2 tablespoons of worcester sauce. 2 tablespoons of brown sugar. 1 tablespoon of american mustard (a cool mustard) For the dipping sauce we repeat the same ingredients again (except no chicken this time) Dipping sauce: 2 tablespoons of tomato sauce. 2 tablespoons of worcester sauce. 2 tablespoons of brown sugar. 1 tablespoon of american mustard (a cool mustard). Tools needed: A large pyrex bowl or similar, (to mix the wings & sauce together) An oven proof shallow dish big enough to accomadate all the coated wings. Optional: (though better for even cooking) an oiled wire rack that fits inside your ovenproof baking dish. Vegetable oil & a brush (to lightly coat the wire rack, this helps stop the chicken from sticking when cooking & being raised helps cook your food more evenly by allowing water to steam underneath it, keeping the meat moist).

LOCTITE 595 BADGE GLUE.
Learning to sew is a lifeskill, (& part of your home help badge too). But many parents & carers these days don't necessarily have the skill to do this either nowadays. Whilst sewing stitches on your badges will be the best & most permanent way of fixing badges to uniform or campfire blankets there are other options, or combinations... It's a tricky one, you want to learn a skill & do it properly but those around you might not be able to teach you. This glue is available at the scouting shop (click the picture link), but is very expensive at around £5.50 per tube. It's recommended you leave a badge to bond (dry & stick for at least 24 hours but after that is meant to be wash & tumble-drier proof afterwards (but we haven't tried it). Iron on Hemming tape. The good thing about this is it's cheap, you can pick up a reel from places such as Dunelm-mill for about £1 for a reel. It's easy to cut to shape with scissors or simply tear off the reel & stick down with a hot iron (steam setting) covered by a damp tea-towel to protect your top & other badges. The downside, it's not very cub-proof! ..can come loose after a few washes or completely off if you only use this to stick your badges on, HOWEVER, a quick iron (same technique again) often works to re-seal your badges onto your uniform (if simply lifting at the edges). We use this & pack lifting corners with a bit more tape before re-ironing, poking excess hemming tape under the badge with the tip of our scissors, if you don't, it will melt when the iron comes into contact with it & cause a mess! We recommend: You use hemming tape to hold the badge firmly in place then after it's cooled apply a few small stitches in place around the edge of the badge to give it additional strength. If using this "twin-fix" method the pressure is off you because the badge is already positioned & won't slip, & only a handful of tiny stitches are needed, so you can use a bigger & easier to control needle to push through material for the remaining work. So simple, even a man can do it! ...(I did)!!! It's a good opportunity to teach a child to use a steam iron properly & safely, ..using this technique feels less of a cheat!

Yup! this was "made by me"
ALWAYS HAVE AN ADULT HELPING YOU WHEN WORKING IN THE KITCHEN! It's lovely as a summer BBQ pudding, or as an indulgent sunday lunch pud, ...(why wait for sunday)!? If you like banana split's you'll LOVE this! ( it does need to be kept covered in a COLD fridge once made, & will last for a few days without spoiling. There are some really great recipes on the internet, BUT! the simplest way to try it is probably the Dr Oetker (packet mix, with some banana's & a good tub of cream for the topping, look for it in supermarkets). However we made it this way... (it's also a German favourite because the 2 countries are close together) & known there as "MAULWURFKUCHEN" Here's how we made it, ...the video is from Youtube & is silent, it has German & English subtitles so it's easy to follow! when we try a new recipe it's good to have the computer ready to help us out with a step by step video! Izzy recommends: you watch the video to the end with a grown up, then you can work out what's in your cupboard & what you need to buy, (we didn't bother with the cranberries, instead we just used banana as our fruit). We also made a warm caramel sauce to be spooned on afterwards because the cake is quite a dry one, & the caramel go's well with banana's & cream! Yummy (1 slice at a time). By Izzy M. Always have an adult helping you in the kitchen. Everyone ought to know how to put this one together even if someone else shares the work with you you'll have a family meal in no time. ...it's as easy as 1, 2, 3 & has very few things to do in order to make a cheap tasty meal when you are in a rush. Mum nipped into Morrisons after work & managed to pick up some chilled pasta sauces cheaply in the reduced area (we hate waste, & pasta sauces are usually fine to freeze so don't worry about best before dates) . She picked up 4 tubs for the price of one, & some garlic balls. She grabbed some good quality juicy "Paddington" sausages from our fab butchers & we bunged them in the oven to bake off (180 centigrade, pre-heated oven for around 25 minutes or until nicely browned) whilst we sorted the rest out. (one or 2 good sausages per person ). 1. boil up a BIG pan of pasta (your favourite or whatever is to hand) 2.Drain in a colander (metal sieve) & spoon the hot pasta into a shallow enamel / pyrex dish. 3.Pour the pasta sauce on top* *SOME people (& chefs) like to ad a good handful of squashed up crsips on top at this point, as they bake off & add some nice crunchy texture). 4. Add some grated cheese or mozzarella (whatever is in the fridge). 5. Stick it in the oven until it starts to crisp off a bit! (about 20 minutes) 6. just over half way through, we popped the garlic balls (garlic bread is nice as an option) ..they only need about 8-12 minutes in the oven (which is already hot as you started the Sausages off (baking). When ready, get an adult to help you remove the hot food from the oven & plate it up for your family to enjoy, if you need more cheese grate some, BUT the sauce will have worked it's way through the pasta coating most of it & adding flavour. serve with some fresh baby tomatoes as a side dish for everyone to grab from. (i'm taking the leftovers in & eating it cold today for my lunch).
Nah! ..we did 1,2,3 AND 4
Hearty congratulations to all 1st Ramsey Cubs are in order from all the Leaders & commitee! Why!? ..because we are very proud to have bashed out a quadruple badge-busting achievement ...that's why! (in fact the lady who we order the badges asked us "ARE YOU SURE you need level 4"!)?? This means we've skipped through badges 1,2 & 3 ..& gone straight to 4 ...WOWSERS! We had numerous qualified (parent) Nurses helping us through it, & the children acted out various scenarios with a proper life saving dummy working through in small groups. The badges are special because this colour badge can move (more sewing) from whenever it is attained through Beavers, cubs & scouts & is replaced by the highest your child achieves (others being relegated to a camp blanket / poncho). No mean feat! ..We are all VERY proud of you, it's a serious subject & a hard badge to get, just remember to practise if & when you can still with an adult present) as it'll need a few good go's to really sink in & become one of the most valuable life skills you may ever use! & not forgetting a big "Thank you" to Parent nurses Julie & Paul who helped out along the way. Now then, why not practise for another badge!? ..the requirements of which need you to sew your own badge on your uniform!? ..hmm what'dya mean your a bit tired after all that badgework & it's best left to a grown-up!? ....tut-tut ;) Well Done Everyone! By Izzy M
Always have a parent or carer with you when working in the kitchen Specialist tools needed: "apple corer" (easily found at stores such as Dunelm This is a great recipe for any cub, beaver, families & carers to try (& have fun with), we've made these ourselves & they are lovely! You will need some good size baking potatoes & an adult with you to help with coring the apple to make the "stuffing space" inside the potatoes, filled with yummy ingredients, pretty much whatever takes your fancy, (& you have hanging around in the fridge). Watch the video, you could make some ready for a BBQ, around a camp fire, or to make ready for cooking in the oven, it's your choice & fun food! I love mine with bacon on the inside, spring onions & grated cheese or mozzarella, with salt & pepper mixed in! ..& bacon on the outside. If you oven cook these, still wrap them in tin foil to make them crispier, & have a good rich coleslaw (we recommend Morrisons 'slaw) & these are no longer simply bland potatoes, in fact, before I tried these I used to make every excuse not to eat a baked spud, ..now I can't get enough of them. Izzy's Tip Note, when using an apple corer go from the longest point end to end, if it doesn't come straight through, push it as far as it will co & then bang it "point down" on a chopping board, often it will make a raised mark on the potato inside & upon removing the corer you'll be able to see exactly where to re-insert it to finish the job! Anyway watch the video to get an idea then grab a grown up & make up a batch of potato bombs! i'm drooling each time I see the video! ..simple cheap, filling, fun! ..& possible to use towards badgework! such as your Chef badge! Give it a go these will soon be a family favourite, ..baked potatoes will never be the same again! Look out for some more recipes soon, don't forget to try this one, it doesn't get simpler than this! Try Dunelm for an apple corer, they have a good range of well priced kitchenware, ..it's worth buying a corer for this recipe alone, because once you find out what your favourite potato filling is, these will become a regular on your "what you want for supper" list, & can be prepared in advance & stored in the fridge until ready to bake off! If you wan't to know which farms you can visit locally click either of the open farm links.. "Last year we went to 2 farms, one with goats, horses & rare breeds in Hilton, a baby Highland cow (calf) had been born in the field 30 minutes before we got there & it's proud dad was watching over mum & baby... which we were able to see really well on board the trailer ride, even the farmer didn't know it had happened he was just as surprised as we were! We learnt what was living in the hedgerows that farmers plant & maintain, some were hundreds of years old, got to see the horses, ponies from their riding school ...& the friendly, licky, climbing goats with whose milk they make delicious ice cream from! (I tried some of that too) ..as well as ducks & other animals, it was a fun & very popular visit. He told us that the kept a few rare breeds & that this was common amongst a lot of farmers in case there is an outbreak of a nasty disease in one area some of the animals are miles away & can be used to make sure the breeds aren't wiped out by things like "foot & mouth" At each farm we used a "dip bath" for our wellingtons, this is disinfectant to keep germs away from the animals that we may bring in, we used it on our way out too, it was like a spongey funfair floor disinfectant filled mat you walked across to clean your footwear! Then we made our way to Wimpole hall "Home farm" & spent the afternoon there for free as well ....as it's a special farm tour day you get to see all-sorts, speak to the farmers & visit or even feed the animals, try out a tractor, climb into the seat of a massive combine & learn more about British farms supplying food & materials which we use each & every day. (great fun, but do get there EARLY to book your places on activities) Izzy Recommends: visit Grafham 27/05/13 ((bank holiday in 3 weeks)) ...for cheap fun ..& badgework8/5/2013 Me, on the "big bad rock wall" By Izzy M. (NB. Grafham water is not affiliated with 1stRamsey scouting) Hope you had a good Bank holiday!? ..I certainly did, we went to Grafham Water in the morning & booked in for Archery, climbing, high ropes, blind trust trail, Canadian Kayaks (the open Indian style canoes), Power-boating, sailing, ... & more indoor rock-wall climbing! My dad made us leave early so that we could sign up before all the places went & that way i could do dry activities first then get wet afterwards.. It was a great day, they had a barbecue (£2.50) & endless cups of tea for 50p (with free re-fills). It was a bargain day out (free-parking too) & will be happening again in a few weeks time, it would be good to see some more Beavers & cubs there hopefully. Even if you only wanted to do a few things or just to get some fresh air with the family dog, on your bike or a walk, Grafham is super fun to go to on a warm day. I'm thinking of taking up archery as a hobby with my Mum & will be going back in a few weeks to tackle & BEAT that climbing wall again, I kept making the mistake of looking down (only ever look up at your next hold). I'd never climbed before in a harness & rope, it can be a bit scarey at first BUT it's great fun seeing just how far you can get knowing it's safe to go high & aim for the top of the platform, it challenges you , might scare you (a bit) whilst you get your head into adventure mode ..& then you are really proud of what you can achieve! Hopefully the activities I did day count towards another badge! ..because you CAN do them outside of cubs! Why not take a look at a badge page (click the badge you are interested in & it will open a link with what you need to do to earn it)! I need longer arms cos i'm running out of space on my uniform!
